Editorial Photography - tell your story in an image, or two

Editorial photography is all about telling stories, or emphasising and extending a written story, maybe add some subtle product placement, and usually with a strict deadline. Editorial photography - it's a great opportunity to produce the occasional quirky portrait image and meet some fascinating people too.

Editorial photography's first principle - what do we need to say with this image

I need to know what the photograph is for - what's the theme? - where is it going? what am I trying to convey? - different publications have different 'looks', is it a cover shot? - do we need room for overlays and text?

Editorial photograph's second principle - choice.

Offer editorial choices with the images, don't get carried away with the first idea, go on to two, three and four - subject to time/budget. Maybe I only have five minutes, maybe I have all day but you need at least two alternatives.

Editorial photography's third principle - what else can we add that will enhance the sitter and their business?

It's always a good move to develop the business potential of an image, and so long as it doesn't compromise editorial integrity or 'the look' there's no problem, in fact, the more client related information I can incorporate into the image the better it tells the story.

Editorial photography's vital principle - the deadline

Above and beyond all other principals is the deadline, rarely an issue with a well planned job, but occasionally things change at the last minute - digital cameras, laptops and mobile phones have probably saved more reputations than Max Clifford. Though sometimes, even now, I'm driving around searching for a mobile broadband signal.
